Storing Your Will Print E-mail

Learn what to do with your will after it is signed in this short article.

After you have signed your Will, you need to think about where you are going to keep it. Your will needs to be kept in a safe place. The place should be private and secure and it should be safe from damage by fire or other disasters. You also need to keep the will in a place where your executor can find it.

Sometimes people keep keep them in safety deposit boxes at banks or in fireproof boxes or safes at their home. Some law firms offer the option of keeping the will at the lawyer's office (although, honestly, this is usually done with the hope that the law firm will get the estate administration work!).

Wherever you decide to store it, you should also consider filing a "Wills Notice" with the provincial government. This is not a legal requirement but once this notice is filed, and if anything happens to you, your executor will be able to search the government registry, access the Notice and find out where your will was stored.

In British Columbia, contact the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency for more information. You can even file this notice over the internet through the Department of Vital Statistics web site (click on link above)!
