| Passports - No Guarantor? |
This article explains what to do if you are applying for a passport and you do not have anyone who can act as your guarantor. Please note the rules are changing as of August 15, 2007. Once the rules change, any Canadian citizen with a valid passport can act as your guarantor (i.e. no restrictions on occupation). If you do not have a guarantor and need a Canadian passport before the rules change, you will need to obtain a special form from the Passport Office. The form is called "Statutory Declaration in lieu of Guarantor". Unfortunately, it cannot be downloaded from the Passport Office web site. You then need to fill out the form completely (but do not sign it) and then bring it to us along with your photos. You will have to swear or affirm that the contents of the form are true before one of our notaries. We charge $40 for this service. Please contact us for an appointment. Note: if you have someone who can act as guarantor, you should use them instead as a fee cannot be charged for acting as guarantor.
