Passport Guarantor Rules are Changing

As of October 1, 2007, the passport rules regarding guarantors are changing. Under the current rules, your guarantor must be on the list of 'approved' occupations such as a lawyer or doctor. However, once the rules change, any Canadian citizen with a valid passport will be able to act as your guarantor (i.e. no restrictions on occupation). This change will greatly simplify the application process for those who have recently moved and who do not know a guarantor on the approved list. For more information, see this page on the new guarantor rules. In addition, effective August 15, 2007, the application process for renewal of a passport will be simplified: see Passport Canada's Simplified Renewal Page for more information.
